Although hair loss is not a debilitating or life threatening sickness, yet the very thought of baldness can give sleepless nights. Since, people relate baldness with self-esteem, hair loss sufferers spend billion of dollar annually on remedies ranging from drugs, vitamins to hair oils and shampoos.

The conventional approach to treat loss includes drugs therapy and hair transplant. Minoxidil and Propecia (Finasteride) are the only two drugs approved by the FDA for hair growth in men. The treatment with Minoxidil and Propecia is effective and shows positive results for balding conditions on the vertex region of the scalp. Though effective, these drugs have also potential side-effects and also unknown long term effects.

Because of the side-effects involved in the conventional treatment for hair loss, there has been significant increase of interest in alternative treatments such as 5000 years old science of Ayurveda. Ayurveda, the ancient science of medicine, has been using herbs to cure hair loss effectively. The ayurvedic herbs are derived from natural resources and therefore free from side effects. Here we discuss some of the herbs that are believed to reduce the rate of hair loss and at the same time stimulate new hair growth. These herbs are proven to be practical, natural, and effective for centuries.

- Aloe Vera or Barbadensis Miller is considered to be one of the best herbs for hair loss. Aloe Vera has anti-inflammatory properties that prevent hair loss and are even beneficial for curing Alopecia. Moreover, the herb is also known to stimulate hair growth.

- Shikakai is one of the Ayurvedic herb used for its strengthening & conditioning properties on the hair. It controls dandruff, promotes hair growth and strengthens hair roots. It is popularly known as “fruit for the hair” as it has a naturally mild pH, that gently cleans the hair without stripping it of natural oils.

- Eclipta alba (bhringraj) is the best known herb for preventing balding and premature graying. The whole plant and seeds of bhringraj have great medicinal value. Bhrngaraja is equally useful both, internally as well as externally.

- Emblica Officinalis or Indian Gooseberry is one of the best known natural product for overall health of hair. It enriches hair growth and hair pigmentation. Gooseberry also strengthens roots of hair, maintains color and luster. Eating fresh fruit or applying its paste on hair roots improves hair growth and color. It is popular as Amla in India.

- Soap Nuts (sapindus mukorossi) herb liquid can actually be used to clean hair in place of your regular shampoo. Popular as Reetha in India, Soap nut is an excellent hair tonic and used as a natural cleanser for washing hair, and forms a rich, natural lather. It is still being used as a naturally produced shampoo by the rural folks in India for washing their hair.

- Henna is another excellent herb for the maintenance of healthy hair. Henna or Lawsonia Inermis can enrich color and enhance overall health of hair. It is a powerful and natural hair conditioner that can help heal the hair shaft by repairing and sealing the cuticle, protecting hair against breakage and loss of shine.

- Indian Neem or Azadirachta Indica helps remove dandruff and has a detangling effect. It possesses antidandruff, antibacterial, anti viral and fungicidal properties and therefore protects or fights off infections of scalp.

- Fenugreek is an effective Herb proven to increase hair growth and reduce male pattern baldness. The seeds of Fenugreek are extremely potent and thus have a medicinal effect to reduce balding. The crushed or boiled seeds alone have been found to restore the hair shaft.

Ayurvedic herbs contain healing compounds that can help rejuvenate unhealthy hair, restore its shine and balance, and combat hair loss. With these natural and safe alternatives one can not only take care of hair but also keep away from harmful products full of harsh chemicals. Some of the herbal shampoos that treat hair loss uses all (like IHT 9 Hair Loss Shampoo) or many of the herbs mentioned here as the key ingredients of their hair loss products. Where a heathy, shiny hair makes one look good; dry, damaged or oily hair spoils it. Oily hair seems greasy and unsightly all the time. This type of hair not only attracts more dust and dirt but also leads to acne and pimple problem. There are many causes for oily hair but all result in one way. These different causes accelerate the production of sebum in the sebaceous glands of the scalp/skin and thus leading to oily hair. These different causes are:-
- Hot and humid climate
- Hormonal changes/imbalance due to improper diet, lifestyle, medicines, illness, different stages like adolescence, pregnancy, menopause etc.
- Genetical Factors
- Chemical hair treatments and frequent use of greasy hair products.
- Pollution
- Stress
Following are some popular remedies that have helped treat oily hair since ages:-
- Blend yogurt (curd), henna powder and egg together. Apply this solution on scalp and hair. Leave for half an hour and then rinse off with water. Shampoo if you wish to eliminate the odor of egg. Use this concoction as a shampoo. This not only helps in controlling excess oil but also softens the hair.
- Rinsing hair with flat beer helps in conditioning and removing excess oil.
- Application of witch hazel on the scalp is also a good remedy for oily hair. Apply it on the scalp and wash off after leaving for few minutes.
- Apple Cider Vinegar is proved to be beneficial in treating oily hair. Mix two tablespoons of apple cider vinegar in a cup of water. Apply this solution on your scalp and hair. Rinse with normal water after few minutes. Repeat it twice week. Lemon juice can also be used in place of vinegar.
- Mix one tablespoon each of mint juice and aloe vera gel with your regular shampoo and use it to rinse your hair with. Sprinkle baby powder on your hair lightly. Brush your hair thoroughly from roots till end so that excess powder is brushed out. The powder left in hair will absorb the excess oil.
With these remedies, following precautions are also needed:-
- Shampooing is essential for oily hair type. Though, an oily skin is blessed by aging slowly unlike dry or normal skin, still it is not liked because of the uncomfortable and embarrassing feeling attached to it.
When the sebaceous glands in our skin become more active due to some reasons, the production of oil is increased thus resulting in an oily skin. Stretch marks mostly appear on those body parts where fat is stored in large amount. The parts that are commonly affected by it are abdomen, breasts, upper arms, thighs and lower back.

Our skin has its own elasticity limit but when this limit is crossed and is stretched beyond that rapidly, the fibers in our inner skin break and cause stretch marks. The reasons behind this excessive stretching can be-

1. Sudden weight loss or weight gain
2. Pregnancy
3. But be careful, winters can harm your skin. Although skin is the protective layer of our body but it needs protection too. Where the summer heat burns and tans the skin, the chilly harsh dry wind of winter leaves the skin dry, scaly and itchy. If not taken proper care, one can end up in an irritating situation. We would be discussing here some natural ways to maintain your baby soft skin.

* The first and foremost thing is to keep your skin moisturized as the dry wind strips the essential oil and moisture from the skin. Apply an oil-based moisturizer frequently or whenever required. As soon as you are out from a bath/ shower, apply the moisturizer as the wet skin seals it in. Moisturizing creams and lotions with vitamin A and c, Avocado, Shea Butter, Almond Oil and other natural ingredients work wonders.
* Applying a paste of skim milk powder with lavender, rose or your preferred oil is very useful. A rose or lavender oil massage is also good for dry skin.
* Apply a mask of Avocado and wash off after leaving for 15-20 minutes. Avocado can also be eaten.
* Long hot showers should be avoided even though they feel great in winters. The hot water rips off the moisture from your skin leaving it dry. Have short warm showers instead of it and apply a good moisturizing lotion or cream after patting your skin dry. You can also have an oil massage before your bath. This will help in locking the moisture in.
* Add a handful of cornstarch in water and have a soak. It is an excellent remedy for dry and itchy skin.
* Though everyone is aware of the importance of sunscreens in summers, very few know about the significance of it in winters. Wear a sunscreen with SPF 15 or more on the exposed parts of body. The application of sunscreen on the exposed parts like face will not only prevent it from sun damage but will also prevent it from cold weather adding to the moisture level.
* Do not forget to use lip balms. Lips being the sensitive part need a high level of protection especially in winters. Lip balms act as a protective barrier for lips against the unfavorable weather conditions. Do not lick your lips too.
* Exfoliate your skin on weekly basis to remove the dry and dead skin. A homemade scrub can also be prepared for this reason. Soak some almonds overnight in whipped milk cream (quantity can be like 5-6 almonds in one-fourth cup of whipped milk cream). Grind it and add two tbps of sesame oil in it. Use this as a scrub.
* Dress appropriately in warm layers. Choose cotton fabric as the innermost wear that touches your skin. Socks and gloves are a must for all in winters not only when going out but also at home. Whenever your hands are to be in contact with chemicals (dishwashing/home cleansers, detergents etc) for cleaning or washing purpose, special gloves for these purposes should be wore.
* Do not use harsh soaps, as they are harmful for skin. Use gentle soaps. Liquid or herbal soaps are good options. Ground green gram paste can also be used in place of soap.
* Keep your home humidified. You can use humidifier or steam water by putting it on slow boil to balance the humidity level.
* Exercise regularly. This will regulate the circulation besides providing warmth to your body.
* Don't reduce your water intake because of winters. Drink plenty of water even if you are not thirsty.
* Include dairy products like cheese and milk, Soaked almond oils, Indian Gooseberry (Amla), warm soups and of course more fruits and green vegetables in your diet. If thought about it, it's actually true. Most of us take proper care of the beauty of face, our hair, our outfits but neglect the feet. And if noticed, feet are those body parts that need most of our attention. They bear our body weight all day long and get in excess contact with dirt and dust. This results in dirty, cracked and unhealthy feet.

Cracked heels not only indicate that they are not being cared but also tell us about the internal deficiencies. They are not harmful until the cracks are deep. Once they are deep, they are painful and the skin bleeds leading to further infections. Timely attention can cure this problem but it may take long for those who are suffering from never ending ailments like sugar or diabetes.

Let's have a check on the causes, preventions/precautions and some natural remedies to have soft and healthy feet.

Causes

Ill-fitting, hard or back open footwear

Standing for long hours on regular basis

 Insanitary conditions

 Hard floors

 Walking barefoot on dirty surface

 Overweight

Disease (like Athlete's foot, Eczema, Psoriasis etc)

 Nutritional Deficiency

 Dry skin

Preventions/ Precautions

* Do not go out barefoot. Wear socks or any soft footwear, even if at home.
* Don't let your feet get extremely dry. Apply any cream or oil whenever required but don't apply before going out as it will attract more dust.
* Always wear footwear that is soft, comfortable and fits you properly.
